IIT BOMBAY GD PI EXPERIENCE MBA ADMISSION 2012-14

Shailesh J Mehta institute of management for the first time came into CAT fold this time. The cutoff for general category went at 98.7. IT was surprisingly high considering that the ranking of the college was around 19 presently.Anyways i considered myself fortunate enough to have cleared it by a whisker with a 99.12 percentile.THey provided hostel accomodation at IIT BOMBAY which was helpful.We were alloted hostel H1 in IIT Bombay.IT was a rather big college where there used to be buses for transport from one part of the college to another. In the hostel most of us discussed about other calls. Some said that at 99+ mdi was obvious possibility as they give high weightage to cat score.Some discussed about relative order of preference. Some said New IIMs are better ,some said SJ Mehta too is now coming up with high packages.The entire night went in chit chatting.
The next day that is 5th march 2012 . We assembled at the hall of Shailesh J Mehta . We were asked to stand in 4 queues as per our registration ids.Then we were divided into groups and were given tags to put in our shirt. And then we were lead to another room where a brief presentation was held about what iit bombay stands for and how mba there could be helpful.After the presentation we were then lead to a room where gd pi was held. There were 3 people in the panel. And we sat surrounding the panel members along with the group.
The topic was “An employee working in an mnc has been recruited by an HR on the basis of strong academic performance. He was given a high remuneration initially commensurable to whatever he asked.He proves himselt to be the asset to the company before rumours about corruption in the company caught his ear. He was continueously overloaded with work by his fellow workers and started to feel sad as he was left with less time for his family.Over stressed and over burdened he decided to quit and sent his resignation to the head HR .What should the HR do?”
Well the topic was deliberated well by all the members. Some said he should not have been given the salary initially before himself proving his worth in the corporate environment . It may be his salary that others were getting jeolous and hence not working. SOme said it was HRs job to select the best candidate and up till that moment he was having good acads and hence perfectly suited the job as harworking people are assets to any company.Some said independent enquiry needs to be constituted and then press be involved to check the corruption that was taking place. I said “first step should be to call him up and ask him in person what all things he is facing . IF it is workload that is disturbing him then we should change the department for him and give him in those departments where workload is lesser atleast for the time being we should retain him because he is a proven dilligent employee. Then we should run a personal team to verify the rumours and if someone is found implicated then he should be dealt accordingly. Public release can be bad for business of the company so as an HR i would say not to go for any public release on workings of the company internally.” . There after again the group began the discussion. IT went on and on for about 14 minutes. We had 13 members in the group . We were asked to write about the discussion and our final viewpoints. I was asked to conclude . I did so reiterating my point and it was accepted by the group.
After the GD we were asked to wait for the pi and document verification followed in between. The interview that followed was taken by the same set of GD panel members.Only difference perhaps was that this time only 2 of them were present. It was as follows:

I said, “ thank you sir”
interviewer 1,” uddalak banerjee...you are a bengali?”
I said ,” yes sir”
interviewer 1,”what is difference between magic and reality?”
I said,” magic is science which extrapolates reality.”
Interviewer 2,” you like science?”
i said,” i am an engineer and a science student. So yes indeed i do “
Interviewer1,”what was your discipline in btech ?”
I said,” computer science engineering”
Interviewer 2 ,” which college?
I said,” NIT RAIPUR”
Interviewer 1,” so you are from the national institute of technology fold..hmm.. so IITs come ahead of NITs ..so what are your thoughts on that “
I said,” SIr both IITs and NITs are having a rich fund base in the government of india . BOth are promoted as best institutes of the country and has got great recognition in india and abroad. NITs which were consituted of the Re colleges in 2002 were late to start and hence it took some time.But NIT trichi,suratkal,calicut,warrangal give high competition to the best of IITs. Recently i think from next year that would be one common entrance for IITs and NITs .”
Interviewer 2,” hm.. tell me which subjects in computer science you are athome with ?”
I said,” Core Java and Networking”
Interviewer 1,”write the layers of OSI layer “
I wrote : physical,datalink,network,transport, session,presentation ,application
Interviewer 2,” why is C++ not complete?”
I said,”sorry sir i didnot understand the question”
interviewer1,” is C++ complete?”
I said,” It is object oriented language .Are u talking about completeness in the algorithmic concept or in the Theory of Automata concept of completeness of languages.
Interviewer 2 smiled and said,” what are differences between java and C++?”
I said,” java doesnot have the concept of multiple inheritance directly although it can be implemented through interfaces in c++ multiple inheritance is possible. Then, In case of Java it is completely platform independent while C++ it is not completely platform independent”
Inteviewer 1,” what is the difference between a bridge and a gateway?”
I said,” bridge and gateway operates in different layers of OSI”
Interviewer 2,” what is the basic difference between router and gateway?”
I said,”manner of transport of packets from source to destination are different”
Interviewer1 ,”w hat is CIO ?”
I said” sorry sir i dont know”
Interviewer 2,” what is the unit for measuring of Oil?”
I said,” internationally it is barrel”
Interviewer 2, “ when there was a unit of power in watt why did they use horsepower as another unit ?”
I said,” i horsepower is 746 watt approx. One unit is not enough for calculation of power of higher order especially related to engine powers . 1 watt would be 1 joule of work done per second. Which is very less as compared to the amount of work done by higher mechanical devices.So as the power grows exponentially higher we need higher unit. The concept remains same for having kg over g and then tonnes over kg. It makes calculation and representation easier.”
Interviewer 2,” so you dont know what CIO is?”
I said,: no ..sir.. i cant recollect now..CEO is chief executive officer who in our company is shanbala..then COO who is chief operating officer . CIO i dont recollect right now”
Interviewer 1,” what are your extracurricular activities?”
I said,” i am an activist in various social affairs. I have been part of RTI community for long and voiced my opinion in various forms. I have written twice in newspapers on two issues one was for deregulation of oil prices and the other was on quota system in indian education. I have also written in various platforms on VAT and implored that excise duty calculation methods be more lucid.I am a habitual poem writer and also write shortstories and have international publications for the same.”
Interviewer 2,” what other calls do you have?”
I said,” XLRI, IIT delhi,kanpur,madras,kharagpur, 6 IIM s , Nitie,MDI, IMT ghaziabad,ximb, iifm,scmhrd”
Interviewer 1,” tell us as per your preference first 3”
I said,” XLRI would be 1, MDI would be 2 , IIT bombay would be 3 along with NITIE
Interviewer 2,”what about the IIM s ?”
I said,”sir they are yet dark horses if converted would fit in the no 2 slot with mdi.
Interviewer 2,” hm.. but iits are also doing well these days in mba .in operations it is advancing fast”
I said,” yes indeed sir, but i still believe that this remains the best order of preference as per pagulguy rankings and outlook rankings calculated based on infrastructure ,placements and teaching .”
Interviewer 1,” ok do you know about blue java?”
I said,: blue java is an editor “
Interviewer 2,” you have cracked aieee and made it too nits so you must be good in physics too. So what is difference between monocromatic and diacromatic in physics?”
I said.” mono means one and crome means colour..so monocromatic is one coloured and dia cromatic means two coloured....there are others like poly cromatic which is multi coloured”
Interviewer 1, “ what other exams u cracked in class 12 ? i see here that u cracked CAT , XAT,SNAP,IBSAT,NMAT each with 99+ nearabout. So why could u not make it to IIT s in Btech?”
I said,” Sir IIT remains every engineers dream in BTECH. I cracked a few exams but most prominent remains AIEEE with 99+ percentile. I tried hard in IIT and scored 154 but then that was not enough in general category as it needed 170 + to get into top IITs. I got through AIEEE and secured CS in an NIT which was i believe a decent achievement in itself.”
Interviewer 1, “Which one among the three subjects in IIT jee u faired badly because 154 as ur score card shows is still a good score..what was ur score in maths?”
I said,” I scored 15 in physics and 73 in maths and 66 in chemistry. As u can see in my scorecard. I think physics was something i tried hard but could not do.Actually in kolkata there is no coaching as such which is prominent for IIT JEE people are not that conscious. IT becomes very hard to score if there is no guidance especially in exams like IIT JEE”
Interviewer 2,” ok i think that would be all. Please call the next candidate.”
I said ,” thanks sir”
RESULT : WAITLISTED
* in iit bombay the waitlisted candidates upto 200 gets cleared everyyear as most other candidates called opt for mdi,iims ,xlri and so on. So hopeful of a clearance very soon although now it is inconsequential for me with mdi and xl in the bag along with iim r.
