IIT KHARAGPUR GD PI experience MBA Admissions 2012-14
==============================================UDDALAK BANERJEE
IIT kharagpur calls have been traditionally profile based .Even when they used to subscribe to JMET they used to give calls based on profile. THis was the first time that IIT kharagpur came under CAT. The cutoff was 95 percentile. So with a 99.12 percentile i made it by a long hop . The interview for kharagpur unlike IIT BOMBAY and DELHI was held at kolkata at IIT KGP extension centre in Salt lake, kolkata. So it became a lot easier for me to attend it. I rescheduled the interview to 21st so as to accomodate MDI which was a mostly a top 10 college as compared to IIT kgp which this year was at 27 as per pagulguy rankings. Once there at the centre i met a few of my IMT Ghaziabad GDPI friends. IT was surprising that in most places after a few GDPI u get to see someone common.Once there as we were waiting for any official annoucement we were chatting about our mdi experience and also about different iims and the criterion and how it was greatly difficult these days for a general category engineer to procure calls and so on. Soon the Incharge came out and he was a bengali too. He ushered all assembled to the separate hall room. There we had a brief presentation for sometimes. We were then distributed into groups .Then they distributed a few sweets for making it upto here.At first we were thinking not many would turn up because it was not a top 20 college but then we were proved wrong as many assembled.Around 70 people were present for that slot . So we began to calculate that for kolkata centre for 4 days in 2 slots would mean around 560 people and then there were other centres across india too.Amidst all dillydallying finally the coordinator who was aged and mostly was a professor at IIT kharagpur came out and escorted us to a room as per our group ids. There we sat for sometime before being taken to another room in the first floor where GD topic was announced .
The topic was written on a sheet of paper . IT was a case study. IT stated that ,”
There are 3 newspapers namely statesman ,Timesof india and telegraph. ALL of them have a fixed market share among different segments of the masses. Now Times of india is starting to raise its market share by entering new markets and competing deccan chronicle in gujrat.Telegraph too wants to grow.We had to analyse and say how this growth could be achieved.”
The initial speaker from our group spoke on the diverse data and said that competition in a market can only be segmented . Not all people like to read same newspapers and hence market will exist for all. I broke in saying ,” the data provided proves that growth is already been provided by a newspaper that is times of india by entering a new market in gujrat where it is now competiting with deccan chronicle. So taking lessons from that we should try to increase the circulation of the paper Telegraph because any newspaper to grow either has to enhance the quality of news by bringing in more news which the reader wants to read or by increasing the volume of sale through marketing and mass publication . For the first to happen we need to release telegraph in multiple languages and also increase the number of centres to include more and more local news which would be of interest to all the local readers from across the country. In the second case we need to enhance the publication capacity and promote it over competing brands by saying that we dont print paid news or cheap publicity news like Times of india. We need to enhance the print because once we increase the print volume the cost of print on an average will go down. Because if 10 pencils cost 100 rs if we buy 100 pencils he will give it to us in 900 rs. Which is fundamental in every mass scale purchase and production. The bigger the volume the lesser the mass scale cost per item.” . The group then again started to deliberate on issues like other medias like tv as a possible ally in case of marketing and also the chances of takeover of another newspaper which specialises in local news and so on. I spoke a few more times . ANd soon the bell rang and the debate was over. Each of us were asked to conclude for 1 minute each. I summarised the group and said,”diversification is needed for growth” and hence we should provide for it in whichever way possible by buying a smaller business in the form of another local newsprint or through enhancing of capabilities by going for a public offering. We were then asked to write on the topic of GD in a piece of paper with our enrollment numbersand cat registration numbers at top part. We wrote and submitted the paper.
AFter the GD was over we were escorted back to the previous room and there we waited. My number was 7 so i had to wait for my turn to come. There again people started to talk on their gd experience and i felt most other people felt that i would be through. Which was a bit encouraging. BUt i was feeling apprehensive of the interview because they were saying that some one infront of me was asked to draw a diode and explain the workings of zener diode inspite of being a computer science engg. I was feeling disconcerted and a bit anxious .Some of them were asked about market capitalisation curve based on capital market and money market. I had no clue and was feeling rather apprehensive and was searching in my mobile as to what they were. Interviews mostly stretched for 10 minutes for the first two candidates then from the third to fifth it was around 15 minutes each. The wait was getting tiresome at times and the anxiety was getting the best of me.Soon the interviewer and came and called “ NO 7 please come in for the interview”
There were two interviewers .One was mostly writing down marks .THE other one was questioning.
Interviewer 1, “ take ur seat. uddalak! what does the name mean?”
I said,” It means rising light ..It is from mahabharata it was given to rishi aruni when he blindly obeyed the commands of his master.”
Interviewer 1,” ok ..so which other calls do you have?”
I said,” XLRI , 6 IIMs , IIT bombay, delhi ,kanpur, madras, MDi, IMT g , gim ,scmhrd, siib, iifm, nibm, ximb and so on.”
Interviewer 1,” which is your best call ?”
I said,”XLRI”
Interviewer 1, “ So you have got calls from xlri, iim , mdi is it pointless for you to come here??? it is obvious that u wont come to iit kgp even if u convert!”
I replied that”Sir in xlri they had called 1000 students in each course with seats 120 each which makes a seat ration of 1:8 nearly. In case of new IIM s they have called 6000 people for barely 300 general seats. The chance of convert is rather tough although most will opt out but still chance remains skewed. For mdi they have called 3000 people for just 360 odd seats which is nearly 1:10.For IIT Bombay they had called 800 odd people for 100 odd seats at ratio of 1:8 and biggest factor of all of these people are toppers in CAT who get called. They all have 99+ percentiles in cat or xat. So getting a convert or even waitlisted is always tough. “
Interviewer 1,” hm..so then u have cracked snap, xat, cat, ibsat, gmat, nmat, ibps, mat. Out of them which one u felt most tough and why?”
I said,”I think GMAT was the toughest. Because the questions were lot harder and they had a time constraint which was hard to deal with because there was negative marking for each wrong answer and if u dont finish the paper then also there was negative marking and above all the questions in english were very very analytical far tougher than cat or xat and the exam was really long for 4 hours and writing 2 essays followed by the paper was rather enervating.IT was like running a marathon without food and water”
Interviewer 1,” among cat and xat which one did u find tougher?”
I said,” XAT was tougher because questions were very hard as compared to cat .Besides i personally believe normalisation should not be there because i feel that it doesnot do justice most of the times. If i get a easy paper and someone else gets a tough paper ,it may be that i attempt lesser as compared to an easy paper but attempt more in a tough paper in which i may have common questions or questions which i am at home with. SO i believe it should be the old paper based pattern and normalisation should be done away with.”
Interviewer 1,” u have 99.98 in NMAT which is very very high score. So you wish to join Nursee mOnjee?”
I said,” sir nmat for me was the preparation for cat i chose the date as 5th nov ahead of cats date at 9th nov . So that i could get a competitive paper ahead of cat to analyse myself. “
Interviewer 1,” ok so u have done your graduations from NIT ..tell me what all things u liked about NITs incomparison to IIT s”
I said,”NITs are the next biggest brand after IITs . So mostly whatever is there in an NIT is also present in IIT.But one thing in NIT is there in addition to an IIT apart from the diversity of students .IT is unbridled ambition.A nit student without fail or exception is one who had not been able to crack IIT but has definately come close .FOr NITs u need all india rank around 7000 at best to get CS now a days .For such a score among 12 lakh people who take AIEEE u need to be good at it. But for an IIT u need to be best at it. But between the good and the best there is a gap. And that gap breeds ambition.”
Interviewer 1,” so do you feel that IIT people dont have ambition?”
I said,” not at all.you will see that previously before the rule that no iitian can reappear iit .Especially years before 2005 and 2006 very many people from IIT used to reappear in IITJEE to change their branches. So ambition is there but then they being in IIT are bigger achievers so they take that confidence factor into their lives. A greater visibility always is there.Which being in NIT comes fractionally less. This lessness breeds a great sense of competition and ambition to achieve more.”
Interviewer 1,” ok now lets ask some technical questions. Which subject u are comfortable in ?”
I said,” any subject .As such there are no hard and fast rules. I believe that if i know the answer i should be able to answer. I know the fundamentals”
Interviewer 1, “what is algorithmic complexity of binary sort?”
i said, O(n2)
Interviewer1,”which is faster speed of light or mind?”
i said ,” mind”
interviwer 1,” what is the need of grammer in theory of computation?”
i said,” grammer gives set of rules which is important to classify different languages.Even in case of english language one needs to have a prescribed well defined set of rules otherwise everyone will write his own language without any verb or preposition . At least with some standardisation it will not happen.”
Interviewer 1,” what are the isotops of hydrogen?”
I said,” proteum, deutorium,tritium “
Interviewer 1,”what is the line through focus called in a ellipse?”
I said,” latus rectum”
Interviewer 1,” how to find the number of real roots of a quadratic equation?”
i said,” it is by seeing the value of Determinant. If D is less than 0 then it has imaginary roots . and imaginary roots usually come in pairs.
Interviewer 1,” and for any polynomial how to find number of real roots?”
I said,” by noticing the change of sign on relacing the independent variable with - times of independent variable”
Interviewer 1,” what is need of integration in case of non continueous curves?”
I said,” integration is used to accumulate the area under the curve as a whole . For non continueous curves there can be integration of smaller components by breaking down the limits into continueous parts . BUt then the value that comes out of the integral would not be the same as the value required to be computed for the area under the curve leading to erreneous hypothesis.
Interviewer 1, “why is it that integration of odd function is 0?”
I said, “because in case of an oddfunction the function for the independent variable gives a negative value in case of minus times of independent variable. So once we take the integral from a positive limit to a negative one across the curve the summation of the net area goes 0.But then there are other explanations by taking limits over the curve in small intervals. But then it is perhaps the most layman explanation for the phenomenon (smile)
Interviewer 1,”what is the difference between calculation and computation?”
i said,”computation involves logical decision making and calculation is basically addition substraction mutliplication and division”
Interviewer 1,”what is function point ? and where it is used?”
i said,” function point is used incase of docomo model . I dont exactly remember the formula but most probably while calculation of effort we used to use function points.”
Interviewer1,” what is maintainence of software ? why it is needed?”
i said,” software maintainence is need because sometimes the limits of the database are exceeded and needs to be replaced by a new database. The front end part also at times throws repeated exceptions and hence needs regular check . Sometimes bugs affect the functioning and needs clearance.Nowadays development part of most companies are less functional than the support part as mostly service oriented companys stress on the maintainence part and stress on debugging than creation.”
Interviewer1 ,” ok fine . You may leave now.”
I said,” ok thank you sir, good afternoon”
The interview ran for about 32 minutes. Finally as it was over it felt good.
RESULT: WAITLISTED
Waitlist in IIT KGP moves fast and moves upto 100 with ease. However, with mdi convert and xlri too and iim ranchi convert IIT kgp is no longer a valid choice for me.But still i hope that my experience will come to good use for students who would take cat and appear for IITs in the future.
