4.4 IMT ghaziabad GD PI experience for mba admission 2012-14

IMT ghaziabad GD PI experience for mba admission 2012-14

=============================================UDDALAK BANERJEE

IMT ghaziabad was my first interview for the season of mba 2012-2014. IT was in kolkata and was held on 15th February 2012.THe IMT gd pi process was supposed to begin at 8:30 am but it was delayed till 10 am to start. We were chatting with each other on the other calls and overall about IMT . Some said they just want to keep it for reserve as it was not doing well of late. Others said IMT was a brand in itself and that still many companies visit the campus and the cutoff will still be around 90 percentile . The cutoff for the call was not known but given the people in the group and taking into account their opinion it was around 85 percentile for general category. After knowing so i felt a bit relaxed because with 99.12 i had a decent chance specially with the weightage given to marks. First step was to get our documents verified. The calculation of marks for 10th and 12th of ICSE board candidates were not done properly. Because in their case they had to give summation of marks including english and third language as compulsory and rest 3 in the order marks. However after the checking and cross checking we were taken to the gd room.

The GD topic was based on a case study. The case study was of an engine and the amount of pollution that it produces. The issue of global warming caused by the emissions from the engine were also outlined . Overall the topic asked us to debate on how to curve global warming without decreasing the revenue generated from the sale of the engines.

The topic was a bit offbeat. The first speaker ended up defining global warming and how ozone depletion was happening and splitting of oxygen molecules. After the first speaker many spoke at the same time. I tried for a few entries but could not do it because of extreme violent behaviour extered by the multiple speakers who were all speaking at the same time. After waiting about 2 mintues i finally had it and broke in with my own point, i spoke at a very high pitched voice and the group shouting stopped and the all listened, i said,” friends we are deviating from the topic . As has been stated explicitly in the case that we need to analyse the viability of the engine in the current scenerio and also to safeguard the environment for the future generations. As such every engine has a piston and a heat regulation mechanism. IT has certain collants in the form of grease which aids to reduce friction and hence indirectly lessens heat around ball barrings and piston chambers. To reduce global warming we need to first reduce the gas emissions from the engine and also to reduce the heat transmitted to the atmosphere. The gas emissions only can be stopped when we do enough of research and development to develop the electric car system to generate or use hydroelectric energy to produce  mechanical energy in place of the current fuel energy generated one. For that we need to increase the R and D from the present 1 percent of GDP to atleast 8-10 percent of GDP in a step by step way.” The group accepted it and the discussion then revolved on the engine and the green house gases and comparisons with other countries. Some came up with examples of cars in europe and also introduced carbon credit for cars which are limits which cannot be exceeded or else fine would be there. Some said about global standardisation of cars and pollution free engines  and use of anti pollutants in the form of chemicals in the engines. My effort to bring sanity to the group was appreciated by the interviewer panel and they gave me a chance to round up . I used it and rounded up all the points discussed and told about the group inputs like carbon credit on cars, anti pollutant use in car engines, planting of more trees along lanes and streets.I also finally underlined the need for more R and D in car manufacturing companies to produce fundamental changes in car construction techniques and functioning of engines.

After the GD we were asked to wait outside for the PI . My number for PI was rather towards the end at number 11  and was really frustrated to watch others go and having to wait and wait for my chance in the pi.I asked other members of the GD whether  i was audible or not.Mostly response was good. So i felt that one part of the job was done now the last and most important part remains. One of the aspirants were asked to sing in the interview which was audible from the hall and led to much needed entertainment and topic to discuss.THe interviews were of varid length some 5 minutes and others of 18-20 minutes duration. After a prolonged wait finally my number came.

There were 3 members in the interview panel. The middle one was very aged (2)and one was young(1) and the otherside one was middle aged.(3)

Interviewer 1, “why should IMT Ghaziabad take you?”
I was a bit surprised by this direct question that too first up. I said,” because i have over the years been consistent with a 80 + percentage throught my career and i have a cat score of 99.12 and ably backed up by scores in xat  nearing 99 and nmat with 99.98 and snap ,ibsat rank 1 ,GMAT score of 700 along with qualification in gate in successive years.”

Interviewer 2,”so GATE , CAT , GMAT all cracked big time. So why not research. Your profile suits it!”
I said,” sir research is something which takes years to give results . I have invested a quarter of my life in studies and now i want returns out of it. “

Interviewer 3,” what difference did u find in CAT and XAT . And why?”
I said,” XAT was tougher than CAT because it had 3 sections and each had invidual cutoffs along with overall cutoff. Level of questions in XAT are way tougher than CAT.”

Interviewer 2,” but dont u think that if the questions are tough competition becomes easy??”
I said,” Yes, certainly so but then the problem is not just limited to scoring a high overall percentile i had to score uniformly in all the sections to get a XLRI call . Which was a bit tough.Scoring in 3 sections is tougher than scoring in 2 , Time management becomes of greater importance specially when the questions are mostly tough as in xat.”

Interviewer 1,” dont you think that ur career is immensely diversified given that u appeared in IBPS and then in cat ,xat , gate ,gmat..widely diverse exams and you lack direction..may be had u focussed on only one you would have scored even more and created an all time record ?”

I said,” well sir , the thought varies. I believe you should always diversify as darwin had once said that survival of the fittest essentially favours the diversified one. Because life is not a unilateral existence it is a diversified struggle. I opted for ibps because i wanted a government job at the back of everything because u cannot be sure of success in such highly competed examinations like CAT , XAT, NMAT,SNAP . There may be a time where u dont make even one of them. I was lucky i cracked all but then it could have easily gone the other way in which case I felt iBPS gave me another option.”

Interviewer 2,”You are passed out from NIT . Dont u think that u could have got into IIT?”

I said,”yes i did . I tried hard for it but failed because maybe my efforts were not sufficient enough or maybe well directed enough to reach that level which is required to be an IIT graduate”

Interviewer 3,”so you accept defeat?”
i said,” i do accept failure in one but i am not defeated and the string of results in all the exams all of them highly competed with ibps having 10 lakh aspirants , cat having nearly 3 lakhs ,xat having 1 lakh ++ , gmat all across the globe..and so on .  At that time too it was 5 lakh people competing for 5000 seats of IIT but at that time i failed but now i have not. I have proved myself and continually try to prove my worth.Besides even if i failed in IIT i had proved myself in AIEEE and got through to the second biggest brand after IITs the NITs”

Interviewer 1,” what is your future goal?”
I said,” i wish to be the best businessman of the year award winner in ET 2018”

Interviewer 2,” what if u cant ?”
I said,” then in ET 2019 ..if not 19 then 20 ..i will keep trying”

Interviewer 3,”you are a software engineer what editor did u use to write java programs?”
I said,”net beans editor.”

interviewer 1,” have u heard of blue java?”
I said,”yes it is an editor”

Interviewer 1,” what is the use of knowing computer architecture in mba?”
I said,” mba is all about architechure. computer architechure is an example of architure applied to a system. MBA too is a system.AT a macro level it definately is useful to be able to know about one system to extrapolate the working of another albeit with some newer learnings and heuristics.”

Interviewer 2,” were u not irritated outside and sitting for so long?”
I said,” to win something worthwhile one needs to be patient .”

Interviewer3,” last question . What is the meaning of your name?”
I said,” it means rising light . IT was based on a priest in mahabharat who had laid down in the field to stop the flow of water . He was initially named Aruni after that incident he was named uddalak. He also started this patriarchial society.”

Interviewer 2,” do you believe in your name?”
I said,” most definately sir. I have tried my best to glorify my teacher and have written tons of articles on them and their methods of teaching. As for social reforms i have been a regular in hindustan times and have written articles on price rise issue in hindustan times in 2010 and on quota system in education in 2011.I have been and continue to be an active participant in RTI activities and am a registered candidate in RTI forum.”

Interviewer2,”hmm..do you have any questions for us?”
I said ,” none sir besides one.WHen will the results be declared?”

Interviewer 2,” that you will come to know via our website and dont worry you will be intimated via mail”
I said,”thank you sir”
