Goa Insitute of Management (GIM) GD PI experience for mba admission 2012-14
============================================UDDALAK BANERJEE
Goa Insitute of Management is currently third ranked college in xat after xlri and ximb. IT too like ximb were accepting admission on the basis of both cat and xat scores this year. The cutoff was dependent on profile of the candidate. However can safely be assumed to be around 85 percentile in xat with 50 percentile and above in each of the three sections. For CAT the cutoff was 90 percentile and above.THe centre for GDPI was in a hotel near saltlake.THe date of GD PI was on 27th feb just the very next day of ximb. There were a few common candidates attending from the ximb group of mine. One of them was from jadavpur university and was feeling a bit annoyed over his performance in the gd too. He said he was not asked many questions from acads and interviewers were mostly joking and playing timepass with him. Anyways, both he and me were very focussed on gim because i felt it was a good college with 9 lpa as an average placement stats and both of us and others present did not want to miss it. There were around 15 present at that time slot which was 1:30 pm . And soon The professor came and took us to a room in first floor and told us to seat in the chairs arranged in order of our registration numbers.
The topic for the GD was “ Indian Economy is in a healthy state.”
We were given 1 minutes each to introduce the topic and then begin our discussions.
I was second in the group . The first person introduced it by talking about the challenges of the economy and that it has to be measured on human development index and it includes poverty, happiness, literacy as parameters.India ranks 119 in that . I was second to speak and spoke for the full 1 minute , saying ,” economy has got indicators to indicate its strength. One such indicator is the stock market which although remails volatile . The GDP too is an indicator as it is the sum total of all the products made .If we consider the overall state of the economy it is well regulated by RBI through CRR, BR,SLR . Sebi keeps a firm hand on stock exchange transactions too. SO it is well regulated and it has been reflected in the strong response to the recession of our banking system .” And then others came in with their own point some stated about the poverty alliviation schemes, some came up with the corruption issue how it is plaguing the indian financial system, some came with the terrorism issue as it is destablising the indian domestic demand etc etc. Once 1 minute for each was over I spoke twice more. I spoke on the different yojana s that are there from indian government to create domestic demand and employment to the low income group . I spoke on the SGRY and RRY and also underlined role played by rural banks (RRBs) in assosiation of Scheduled Commercial Banks in providing financial inclusion. And rounded off by saying that worldbank has already projected that India and China are the rising asian economys which was ably supported by IMF too. As far as loans that india has leading to fiscal deposit they had been taken with the very objective to created domestic demand and self reliance in the agriculture sector where the government in last budget too invested the maximum and the net cost ran into thousands of crores . Through the yojanas the government is pumping thousands of crores of rupees to enhance the infrastructure. INdeed the fiscal defisit is a big cause of concern but then even a Country like America is currently having a trillion dollars in loans to other countries. On the contrary India is atleast in a position to reduce it through the strong banking system which has remained relatively stable and have managed to garner profits in an environmnet of global financeial breakdown. So that Indian Economy is in healthy state is beyond questions.
After the GD was over.I was second for the interview too. So my turn came very fast.
There were 2 persons in the panel.
Interviewer 1,” Uddalak Banerjee.. hard name..did i pronounce it right?”
I said,” absolutely sir”
Interviewer 2,” 99.12 percentile in CAT,99.98 percentile in NMAT, 99.9 percentile in MAT, IBPS score of 180 , GMAT 700, IBSAT 1st rank, SNAP qualified for schmrd,XLRI bm and hrm calls in xat with 99 percentile..passout from National Insitute of technology ..good extracurriculars ...heavy profile ..why GIM?”
I said,” I am a general category candidate and GIM is a reputed college in the top 30 colleges of india . One of my friends and former class mate is also from GIM . He had a placement of 10.75 lakhs on the very first day of campus from there into HSBC. Given the number of companies that visit your campus and a strong reputation of the college with good stress on extracurriculars too apart from a good academic structure besides placements. I dont see why one should not opt for GIM.”
Interviewer 1,” give us your top 3 calls and arrange them in order and also your preference for gim”
I said.” Best call is XLRI , second would be joint for MDI and IIMs , third would be IIT Bombay,DElhi and ximb. As far as gim is considered it is 4th in the preference list.IF i make it to the first 3 then i wont but if i dont and if i get a call from gim then definately i would look to join it”
Interviewer 1,” arrange the following in order of your preference, placement ,academics, peer learning, extracurriculars”
I said,” academics, extracurriculars, peerlearning and finally placements”
Interviewer 2,” But most people come to B schools thinking it to be a placement agency!”
I said,” Sir placements can be secured offcampus also ..if u have a good acads u can appear in a host of national and international papers. Besides if any succesful business mans profile if studied would show that it is not always that he or she has joined one and only company . It usually is a switch from one to multiple companies . SO if academics is good and then extracurriculars is good then he or she would definately after a few quick switches be a very very high pay package . IT need be a direct huge package always.”
Interviewer 1, “Do you believe Bengalis are by birth intelligent?”
I said,” Sir it is hard to say so But yes the peer learning and example learning has been good . There are lots of role models starting from Swami Vivekananda to Raja Rammohan Roy to Rabindra Nath Tagore to Netaji Subash Chandra Bose to current Sourav Ganguly to subroto roy to Rani Mukherjee to Saumitra Chatterjee . “
Interviewer 2,” What according to you makes a Good manager? is it hardwork?”
I said,” Sir manager is the person who is responsible for the teams performance. He can choose to be a rolemodel or he can choose to away from limelight and work on others psyche. As such I believe a good manager should have a good foresight, strong determination, good analytical capability and lastly an understanding of the basic human needs and nature of the employees.”
Interviewer 1,” perfect. “
Interviewer 2,” ok tell me what will u do if someone in the team falls sick and u need to go home urgently and the project needs to be completed today itself?”
I said,”I would try to give online support from my blackberry (smile) as i go home”
Interviewer 2 smiles and asks” ok tell me is there anything u want to ask me about college?”
i said,” sir i am a literary person and write a lot . I want to know whether there are any literary clubs through which i can further nurture my skills?”
Interviewer 1,” as such mba is very stressful and u will not have time for any other thing but still yes if u want to yes u will have.We have got a few clubs on literary nature . Who have got publications on their own”
Interviewer 2,” anything else that u want to ask?”
I said,” sir i have worked with NGOs in swabhiman while working with Birlasoft in noida. I want to continue my assosiations with NGOs because it gives moral satisfaction to me . Does GIM have any NGO centred club or any activity in this regards?”
Interviewer 1,” yes we have . WE work with the self help groups to both promote their work aswell as help them monetarily and educate them to be better citizens of the country. “
I said,” ok”
Interviewer 1,” ok then. We dont have much to ask . Given your superlative performances and your GD Pi we did not have much to ask but stil hope that u would be coming to GIM (smiles)”
I said,” sir if choosen I would definately look forward to joining GIM.”
Interview1,” ok then.Nice talking to you. As u go please call the next candidate and ask them to make a line there.”
I said,” ok sir.thanks”
