FMS GDPI Experience of 2012-14 mba admission

MY interview date for FMS GDPI was on 21st april 2012.FMS for this year had begun to accept CAT score for admission. The cutoff for calls was kept at 98.73 for general category candidates.My CAT percentile was 99.12 somehow made to the call in general category.As such FMS being one of the most prestigious colleges of india was one of the most awaited ones in 2012.Since most of the the results of IIM A B C were already out by the time of the interview .The people who took part in the FMS GDPI process were mostly die hard FMS buffs.To be very frank we were called at 11 am in the morning through mails .But on reaching the centre in the morning it was found that a huge number of candidates have queued up infront of the building. The groups were displayed outside.There were more than 8 panels made and each panel had 10-12 members each. Panels were divided category wise.The times for various panels were different some were at 9:30 am some were at 11:00 am some were at 12:30 pm and others were at 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm. Most of the people were a tad disappointed with the random timings as it meant that even after reporting at 11:00 am for some gdpi would start as late as 3:30 pm.As such managment of candidates was non existant.We were just told to go to the said room and wait there.The wait was a long one.As one group after another were called for gd followed by pi it was kind of hard to keep waiting for your chance.The number of people appearing were huge so it was kind of a tough for the administration to manage everything.Others kept on discussing what other calls they had.MOst people had calls from IIM lucknow and were waitlisted in one of IIM Ahmedabad,Bangalore and Calcutta .OThers were awaiting mdi and xlri results.
After a lot of wait finally my chance came.
GDPI topic was foreign multinationals were influencing indian public.
The time for the GD was equal to the number of people present in the group.Our group had 12 people and hence 12 minutes were allotted to us.
The moment the topic was read out some one started and it soon became a fish market of sorts.People started to talk about china and india trade imbalance and how it is affecting trade.SOme started to speak about it sector and how it is dependent on foreign demand.As for me i made my first entry on 2nd minute and spoke for 30 seconds .I underlined that based on human develepment index india is lagging way behind other countries and that average income of indians are way below some of the european countries and even asian countries.So since money was there so trade is bound to be occuring with them having an upper hand as they were the customers and we were sellers .I also spoke about multinationals what the term means and that it was not just companies but also public who were influencing the trends which were readily visible in delhi and other metropolis where people want branded products to buy even at a higher cost. The debate moved round and round and i made two more entries at later stages.And then it was all over.
The group discussion was soon followed by interview. IT was in general 5 minutes each.Panel had 4 members .
My interview was as follows:
panel member 1: “ please come in and take ur seat”
I said ,”thank you sir”
panel member 2 :” chattisgarh naxalite movement is your topic speak for 1 minute”
I said ,” naxalite movement first began with charu mazumdar and jangal santhal during naxalite movement in westbengal in 1970s against the government oppression on an issue of land acquition by force from poor people.The youth became readily assosiated with it and soon they took arms against the oppression.But in case of CG it was again the same pattern albeit for a different cause.There it was lack of development in the rural areas which lead to the revolt.ErstWhile MP was too big a place to manage specially because of the huge forest cover communication was difficult between diferent parts of the state.As a result development was variegated.”
Panel member 3 broke in “ so is it possible to stop it ? “
I said,” development programmes have been initiated by the BJP govt under Raman singh and they have started ushering in more and more companies.CG currently has a NIT which was our college ,and also an IIM and a AIIIMS both of which are still in its nascent stage.Besides CG is blessed with coal reserves and mines which if fully utilised can produce a lot of revenue.THe electricity is available because of the large number of hydroelectric projects and hence scope of development is huge as energy supply forms an important part of growth.Hence as development is gradually taking place slowly but steadily naxalite movement is slowly losing ground but still it will take more time to completely end it.”
Panel member 4” ok so what are ur interests?”
I said,”writing shortstories and instanteneously composing poems”
panel member 3 .” ok then compose a poem on the GD with hardwork ,success,essence words and also it has to capture the essence of the GD”
I said,” GD started and was a bit loud,
it went around round and round,
hardwork if afterall that produced sound,
essence was there and hence success was found “
panel member 1 , 2 ,3,4 “ wonderful! bravo!”
panel member 1 ,” you are very good with words .IT was great .After a long time we got some good poetry that too instant!”
panel member 2 ,” so you are interested in politics?”
I said,” NOt much but yes i am alive to political environment of the country through newspapers”
Panel member 4,” ok tell me one thing what is more important hardwork or willpower ?”
I said ,” I think willpower is needed to do hardwork so willpower comes first.”
Panel member 4 smiled
Panel member 3 looked at other panel members and then said “ok then u may leave now “
I said ,”thank you everyone “
