4.1 XIMB, bhubaneshwar GDPI experience for mba admission 2012-14

XIMB, bhubaneshwar GDPI experience for mba admission 2012-14

========================================UDDALAK BANERJEE

XIMB was the second best college of XAT which came just after XLRI in the rankings among XAT colleges and overall it was in the top 20 colleges of india .This time XIMB had decided to take both XAT and CAT scores of candidates and the cutoffs announced for call in  PGDM course for cat was 90 percentile in each section and overall 95 percentile and for xat it was 50 percentile in each of the 3 sections and overall of 85 percentile.XIMB remains one of the highly respected colleges of india and boasted of average placement of nearly 10 lakh pa. For obvious reasons most of the aspirants queued up belatedly for ximb. The centre for interview was in kolkata itself in a hotel near saltlake. The date was 26th feb 2012. Both PGDM and PGDM HRM interviews were combined for me as i had call from both the courses. It was getting late because ours was the 2 pm batch and people from 11 am batch were still not through with their interviews at 4 pm of that day. So we were really kind of disconcerted at the prospect that they may not take our interviews seriously and just finish off the business for the day . We were waiting and talking to eachother and talking about life and calls. Some of the aspirants had IIM A , K and I calls . As for the interview when i came here i was very expectant of a good interview because my percentile was 99.12 and had 95 percentile + in both the sections and in xat too i had both xlri bm and hrm calls and boasted of 98+ percentile. But seeing the state of affairs i was kind of apprehensive .Most of the candidates of 11 am whose interview were going on was grilled badly on technical issues. Some of them left hope and left with a sigh. It made us the 2pm people really very disconcerted over our prospects .

At around 5 pm finally the 11am batch interviews were over. And we were asked to join the interviewer to the room. There were 3 interviewers who seated themselves in chairs and we the group of 12 people were asked to take chairs making a half circle.WE did so in due haste as we too wanted to go home early. The previous batch had a topic called “GOD IS MALE”  we were also expecting something on the same lines but in our case it was different . Our topic was “VK singh s age change would be unethical”

Honestlly speaking i did not know much about the topic . Our batch had 3 Chartared Accountants and they leveraged on it magnificiently. One of them started and outlined the whole controversy and then told about all other colonels who might be benifited
if his age was to be turned out. Surprisingly the time allotted was half the number of people in the group here so that meant only 6 minutes was given. The first person himself spoke for 2 minutes and that left just 4 minutes for the group .Now everyone started to speak at the same time as a result choas started and fish market prevailed.
I just managed to speak only once when the group for a few seconds listened. I said that the supreme court ruling had come out on this topic and that the supreme court has annulled any change in date of birth as of now proves that the matter was unethical to change date of birth at later age for a person of repute like the army general who serves as a role model for the country at large. The time soon ended and then we were asked to write on whatever the points came up in gd and then we were asked to wait outside. My personal interview number here was at 4. I thought it will take time for my number to come so i was busy discussing the failure of most people to get valid entry in such short period of time. BUt then to my surprise first 3 people just entered the room and came out. First guys interview time was 13 minutes ,seconds was 2 minutes and third guy was 5 minutes. This was in contrast to the last batches interview when on an average they were taking 20 minutes with candidates.Second guy whose interview was of 2 minutes was totally bemused he came out and said” i dont know what they want .They just told me u are from private college and hence u did not study much . Your percentile is also low. Have u prepared anything for the interview or u have not done that too? if not so on point wasting time with you. You may leave.”  . I was shocked to hear so  I felt mostly because he could not speak in the GD and the day was nearing an end and hence they might have said so. Once i was called i was of the opinion that my interview would be over very fast as i too could not speak much in the GD. So i made a resolve that come what may i would stretch the interview as much as possible.

There were 3 people in the panel.

Interviewer 1,” take your seat and relax.Show us your call letter”

I said,” sir i have been selected for both PGDM and PGDM HRM so will i have a single interview or i will be called in some other date?”

Interviewer 2, “o you have both! ok show us the call letter once “
I said,” yes sir.”

Interviewer 3,”hm..ok it will be one only. Anyways why did u not speak in the GD?”
I said,” sir actually the time was just 6 minutes it was hard to make any impact within the time .With a gd group with 3 CA s and the topic been such a text based one.IT was hard to find space to speak. And the first guy more or less summed  up everything there was hardly anything extra to speak .It would been a bit general had the topic had not mentioned the very name of the person.”

interviewer 1,” so you dont speak much . I felt u were more of art oriented person. Is it true?”
I said,”yes . I write poems and shortstories”

interviewer 2,” tell us something on this mobile”
i said,” mobile is toy ,
that brings immense joy,
it even sings like ehsan loy,
you can watch movies like helen of troy.”

Interviewer 2,” he he he..wonderful..what a rhyme”
i smiled mildly.

Interviewer 3,” so you are a poet.so will u write about us in the pagul guy?”
I said,” no sir .If u say so i will but i dont follow pagul guy as such . “

Interviewer 2,” Tell us something about your background?”
I said,”i am from a banking family and both my parents are branch managers in union bank of india. My father is a man strictly ethical and is known for his fair dealings and hence has lots of friend. I have tried hard to inculcate this capability within  myself.I have done my Computer Science and Engineering from National Insitute of Technology Raipur .Later joined birlasoft thorough oncampus placements.”

Interviewer 1,” why did u opt for a mass recruiter . you could have opted for some other companies like mckensie. Your college is NIT so options are always there in abundance”

I said,”well sir actually yes the options were there but birlasoft came early and at that time which was in 2009 it was the year of the great recession . And most companies were not willing to come to majority of campuses initially .however later all came including ibm,bel , Drdo , ntpc, hpcl but then initially there was a lull. And birlasoft confirmed their participation and at that time i thought it was a judicial choice given the state of market. I felt that i could in any case switch over to some other company after due experience and then the NIT brand has its value in switches too.”

Interviewer 2,”which part of computerscience engineering draws your interest?”
I said,” mostly programming part because it can be easily visualised through output. In other parts it is mostly theoritical and they needs to be imagined more than any practical illustration.”

Interviewer 3.” what is the most common software model?”
I said,” waterfall model”

Interviewer 2.”describe it briefly?”
I said,”well it involves requirement elicitation, planning, staffing, implemenentation that is coding followed by maintainence and feedback.”

Interview 3,” what is blackbox testing?”
i said,” it is the testing type in which the output for a block of code is not known .With random inputs the output is checked.”

Interviewer 2,”what is alpha testing?”
I said,” it is done in the client site by the user .”

Interviewer 3,” can you solve this integration
integral of  dx/ a2+x2”

I solved it by direct formula and put the 1/a  tan inverse x as answer

Interviewer 3,” what is need of calculus?”
I said,” to arrive at solutions of complex graphical types calculus provides a analogical way to get to the solution”

Interviewer 1,” what was your role in the project?”
I said,” Assosiate software engineer . I was assigned the task of maintaining the General Electric Capital Americas Service Delivery Software maintainence.Which was mostly to coordinate with Leasing source team of TCS and Helpdesk team of IBM to upkeep 76 GE sites on service delivery . IT was critical because it involved direct client access.Which was why the salary component was high.”

Interviewer 2,”did u read about akbar?”
I said,” yes i did . he was one of the great emperor of india .He was born of  humayun . He was also one of the youngest kings of india.”

Interviewer 3,” what is difference between love and advantage?”
I said,” love starts with 0 and advantage happens when both are at deuce initially and one gets a point. It happens in tennis.”

Interviewer 2,” so you believe in love?”
I said,” love is a belief .It is what that keeps the world spinning”

Interviewer 3,” how many girl friends to you have?”
I said,” i am from a middle class bengali family which is intensely traditional. The day i meet a girl my mother asks what did she say and why did u talk to her..and so on.. SO you can understand it is immensely tough to have any kind of relationship with a girl. But yes from heart i want but then the scope never comes”

Interviewer 1,:” he he he “

Interviewer 3,” so you are waiting to have one..(Smiles)”
I said,” lets see at the moment career is first.Love can happen later.Anton Checkov once said “ love is a previledge of the reach not the profession of the poor”

Interviewer 2,”what other calls do you have?”
i said,”XLRI,6 iims, MDI, IMT G , ALL the IIT s, nursee monjee, iifm, schmrd, siib and so on.”

Interviewer 2,” you will get into XLRI for sure..so i think the rest are just for your time pass?”

I said,” Not at all sir,IIMs are brand in itself and then there is MDI which is also a huge institute with high packages very good learning environmnet and is persistently in top 10.XIMB too has a huge significance because it is in top 20 and is a huge brand in itself. Among IITs iit bombay is in top 20 asper pagulguy ranking. So they are all esteemed colleges. Besides getting a call and converting it are two different things.”

Interviewer 3,” but if u get XLRI i dont think u will go for any one else. Will u ?”
I said,” it is at the moment too distant to even guess. But yes if i make it in XLRI in BM or in HRM i think i will take it. But then the competition is huge for XLRI they call ratio is 1:10 nearly. So chances of getting in top 4 institutes of the country is always very very low. But yes i still feel that i will give my best shot in every interview that i have got so that atleast i get some good college to persue my education at the end of everything”

Interviewer 2,” you got fms call also i think?”
I said,”they have not come out with the list as yet .But yes i hope to get it too”

Interviewer 3,”so then seriously tell me you really want to come to ximb?”
i said,”yes sir and very desparately. Sir only a very very few people get a chance to be there and i would be very happy if i get that chance . “

interviewer 1,”ok fine u can leave now. But do write one poem on us in pg. I would love to read it “
I smiled and said,”ok sir”

RESULT: WAITLISTED initially but CONVERTED in both PGDM HRM and PGDM later after first and second waitlist movement respectively.
