4.0 Indian Institute of Forest Management GDPI Experience for mba 2012-14

Indian Institute of Forest Management GDPI Experience for mba 2012-14

============================================UDDALAK BANERJEE

IIFM bhopal was a unique college which had an environment which was unique .It was situated over a hill in bhopal far away from locality . IT was a huge campus and provided with the stay and meal voucher coupon at a nominal pay. The stay and three time meal combined costed just 250 Rs.Communication from hill top to the central city was also not an issue since they provided phone number of auto rickshaw pullers who escorted us to whereever we have to go. While coming to IIFM i had met mr Srivastava who was Commissioner of Police ,an IPS officer who seemed to be a great fan of IIFM and said it was very similar to IFS (indian forest service) and that a few days back a tiger was spotted in the campus. After having reached there on surveying the campus with some of the other aspirants i found that it had a lot of dogs.As such the campus had a lot of street lights but it was still dark at the back side as the campus was full of trees and produced an atmosphere of a dense forest. The cutoff for IIFM was rather low it was 80 percentile in cat for getting a call .However it had high weightage to cat score so final conversion was around 90 percentile. They gave call to around 600 people for around 60 seats out of which general seats were 30. With 99.12 percentile in CAT i felt that i should make it easy. But then at night seniors of IIFM came to guide us on the process and said that just CAT score wont matter  a good performance in GD and PI has cutoffs which needs to be met to get selected. So that somehow arose a lot of seriousness in me. The climate was dreamy ,it was calm quiet and beautiful , the entire hustle and bustle of life have ceased here.I applied to IIFM for a backup as it was a government college and 100% placement record with an avg placement figure of 7.5 lpa and it also provided a great life style away from all the hustle and bustle of corporate life.

The GDPI process started in the morning 9:00 . The main building was near the hostel only. IT was really big and well aerated. We were first taken to the GD room after making groups of ten. The process was a  bit slow but was wholly managed by the professors. The GD topic was “India needs to invest more on its defence .”

As such it was a general topic. They threw the topic and said who ever will speak first would be followed by the person to his right and then all will speak in that pattern. So if one guy spoke first ,the guy to his right would be next speaker and then the guy to his right and so on..uptil the end and then form the left chain it will start in the same way. The guy to my left spoke first. He started by saying “ we need indigenous missile systems. We are under constant threat from our neighbours and we should have a proper defence system to combat problems of terrorism.” I continued it by saying that “ India currently is surrounded by string of pearls of china. Which is already established its base in srilanka and is in active negotiation with pakistan and bangladesh to provide a wider base to it. On a head to head basis pakistan has shaheen missiles which can destroy any city in india. Srilanka has often been troubled by LTTE which has also often hurt india due to the active  support  india often provided to srilanka as a dutiful neighbour .IN bangladesh to we often have a hostile ally who often hurts us by providing easy passage to pakistani militants through the porous indo bangladesh border. While USA uses 1 trillion dollar in Military maintainence and Research and Development .OUr government agencies like DRDO often find themselves lack of funds. So we should definately devote more money to our defence as it can also provide a key impetus to our position in global trade  because more the militarily capable a country is the greater trade advantage it gets. A head to head analysis of the most military capable countries would easily point that they are the ones who have maximum countries queueing up to do trade with.” . The debate continued. Some came up with points like development is needed more than military stability. THat got countered by the fact that without military in current situation development cannot occur as for development u need peace and so on. The panel gave 10 minutes for the discussion as we had 10 members in the group. Later we were guided to the PI room.

I was first in the panel .Most probably because of my cat score. I was soon called in .There were two members in the panel.

Interviewer 1,”uddalak banerjee.Cat 99.12 percentile. so why pgdfm?
I said,” sir the percentile is 99.12 . one two part is significant. As i always have wanted to do many things and pgdfm is one of them. I have been recently part of the corporate and life there was stressing and PGDFM can open up the government sector and also open the gateway for a silent life amidst the green.

Interviewer 1,” But u could have switched to Govt sector directly also ?”
I said,” Sir with a profile in it the scope of Govt sector is rather limited. Because govt has very few it oriented companies. Only BEL and DRDO as for CS engineers. Considering that out of 5 lakh engineers who pass out in CS and IT only about 10 to 50 people get to be selected here. Only the banks offer an itofficer in relative abundance but there again there is a competitive exam to be fought in which 5 lakh people sit for about 1000 seats.”

Interviewer 2,”But Mr Banerjee PGDFM can also be stressful considering that it involves regular checks of the forests where u have to go on rounds. You will have to from foundations which will again need a lot of interpersonal activity and time with the village folk.”

I said,” Sir if u see my profile even in Birlasoft i was part of youngleaders and that too voluntarily. It was assosiated with organising programs for the employees and i not just organised them i also participated them . I have won 3 awards in birlasoft in this short spell of time. From a non tangible perspective i have gained so many contacts which perhaps will remain for ever.IT infused a sense of interest among the employees.I believe if given a chance i can definately replicate the spirit here too. Besides for activeness i have written and have published editorial letters on issues like price rise in petrol and quota system in education.“

interviewer 2,”you are a software engineer . What deficiency do you find in software engineering?”

I said,” i  feel that life as a software engineer is limited to the cubicle.IT doesnot have a free environment to talk to general public like banks provide . It is all about creating a software or maintaining it on the basis of pre written instructions which are called codes. The scope any new thing happening in a life of  a software engineer is rather less apart from a sudden increment here and there.(smile)

Interviewer 2,”what are u r hobbies?”
I said,” It is writing poems and shortstories. “

Interviewer 2, “ how do you think you will be able to balance them with busy corporate life?”
I said,”I believe if u have passion making time is not that difficult.Besides writing instant poems is a funny process it enlivens the environment u are working in and brings u closer to the people with whom u are working.”

Interviewer 2,” what other calls do you have? and what is preference of iifm among them?”
I said,” XLRI , MDI, 6 IIMs , IMT ghaziabad,SCHMRD,SIIB,GIM , IIT bombay, delhi and so on
As for preference XLRI is first , MDi is second along with iims and iit bombay, third would be iifm because it offers a wider range to my profile. It diversifies my career and brings in the important quotients like peace and self actualisation.”

INteviewer 1,” tell me one thing u dont want money?”
I said,”  i want money but then that can be earned here also. The course has 7 electives . Which gives greater power of choice . Forest products and forest life are very beautiful.

interviewer 2,” what are ur views on wild life conservation”
I said,” i believe that the future of this world is dependent on wildlife conservation. Problems of global warming and wildlife are interrelated. The safeguarding of ecosystem is of prime importance currently .With kyoto protocol for the first time this need got to be appreciated world wide. There have been various concepts like carbon credit to safeguard the environment. But then the situation is getting worse because everytime i take a flight to some place i find that the shoots of gas are seen from the aeroplane ever prominently and everytime i fly i find that these gases are accumulating more and more. The forest cover of india is only around 25 percent with the highest cover is in chattisgarh which is coincidentally the place where i had done my graduations from .NIT raipur gave me an oppertunity to know chattisgarh in depth. In districts like dantari and bastar there were an opulance of wildlife and buffalo symbolises chattisgarhs state animal. This concept of keeping state animals have helped in safeguarding and promoting wild animals many of whom are at the brink of extintion.”

Interviewr 1,” ok fine . Thank you . You will get to know the result within 14 days. Nice talking to you.”

The document verification followed after the interview.
