SIIB GDPI experience MBA admission 2012-14
=====================================UDDALAK BANERJEE
After SCMHRD and SIBM pune comes SIIB in the Symbiosis umbrella of colleges under snap.
IT was 5th feb 2012 and For SIIB the first major challenge was to locate the building which later i found to be near the schmrd building.IT was adjacent to it in the same campus . The process for SIIB was smooth too.IT asked us to make lines in 4 rows as per the id given to us . Once that was over we were escorted by the group in charge after document verification. We were taken to a room where the GD was about to take place followed by a group task.
The GD topic was “Nuclear energy is a boon or a bane? “
The group deliberated hard on the topic .I was the first to introduce the topic . I said,” Nuclear energy is the need of the hour since we dont have any other alternative sources of energy. As such for india being a developing country is always in a need for more energy resources. While energy resources like hydro and wind are mostly centered in the south ,rain water harvesting has been started in orissa and in the central india we have solar energy harvesting. But all these energy production is not enough to meet the needs of 1.21 billion people. We need alternate sources as big as nuclear energy even when there are risks related to waste management of nuclear energy use.” The group began discussion on various methodology of wastemanagemnet and how useful it was and whether moves have been adequate on behalf of the government while dealing with energy crisis.I made a few more entries in the GD .One was towards the end . When i said that the energy agreements with other countries have been taking place in this regard so that fuel energy requirements could be met and indegenous search of fuel sources in the form of oil explorations is continued by various private and public agencies in gujrat ,rajasthan and parts of madyapradesh and so on. Moreover the GD went smoother and everybody spoke once.
There was one coincidence. In the SIIB group there was one boy he was physically handicapped boy who was also in the very same group in scmhrd too.It usually happens very rare. I didnot know how it happened. But it did.I remember him distinctly.I was inquisitive to know his final result but then i missed out on his number and also dont have his full name to search in fb. Anyways it is life it moves on.
Then came Group Task. The entire group of GD was divided in groups of 4 each.We were given straws and 4 balls. The balls were placed in 4 corners of the table. We were asked to blow through the straws so as to move those thermocol balls to the centre of the table in the marked circle without dropping the balls. We did it with ease and successfully completed it twice in the stipulated time. The judge was impressed with the team and gave us a few lines of compliment.
Then came the time for interview.
The panel had only one interviewer . The other person who was sitting with him was perhaps was a behaviour analyst of sorts as he did not ask any questions he was just noticing me and noting down something in his paper.
Interviewer asked ,” uddalak , what is the meaning of your name?”
I said,” it means rising light urdha+alok “
Interviewer smiled and said,” so you know a lot of grammer ?”
I said,” not a lot i just know my names source and breakup in samas.otherwise grammer is a huge field and it has many surprising turns”
Interviewer said ,” what is GDP?”
I said,” IT is gross domestic product . IT is the sum total of all the products made by a economy. It includes primary ,secondary and tertiary components”
Interviewer said ,” what is recession?”
I said ,”It is the state of economy in which there is negative growth as a whole in two consecutive quarters. It is represented usually by a W shaped curve.”
Interviewer said,” are u interested in investment banking ? i see here that ur resume states ur score in IBPS .So what type of banking do you prefer ?”
I said ,” sir my mother and father in public sector banks and are both managers. From them whatever little i could learn it was that banking involves face to face transactions with the public in which there are certain actions performed by the bank like giving loans to the public at some interest from which the bank earns and the other is savings in which the people deposit their savings to earn more which again the bank invests in bonds and equity to earn larger amount of which it gives a small amount as mentioned beforehand to the depositer.”
Interviewer asked” what is investment banking among the two?”
I said,” i dont know totally but i feel that it should be ... the latter . i dont know i am not sure“
Interviewer smiled and said,” ok tell me are u interested in foreign funds like FDI and FII?”
I said ,” yes”
Interviewer said ,” ok tell me what is the difference between FII and FDI ?”
I said,” one deals with foreign investment in direct form through direct acquition or thorough partnership with some other local company and the other deals with investment to buy equity bonds”
Interviewer said,”which one if first and which one is second?”
Isaid,:” FDI is first and FII is second one”
Interviewer said,:”why do you want to do mba?”
I said,” having worked with birlasoft i believe mba is something i need for future growth .”
Interviewer said,” see SIIB is a big brand and it has got a placement figure of around 7 lpa . But the thing is u already have calls from 6 iims, xlri ,mdi which are best in the business and have packages of 14+ each.. why siib ?”
I said,” sir scmhrd is also a big brand it has got a placement figure of 10 lakh in and about..all of these are really good no doubt about it .Even IIT bombay ,delhi are really good and offer good packages too .But sir the thing is i have just got through the first stage. I have not yet cracked them all .Only when i would have got the final letter of confirmation can i think over relative status. As of now i think it best to just take one at a time . I believe that if i convert in SIIB it will give me an impetus to my career. For MBA i need a good college which SIIB is . If i get a great college like iim, xlri, mdi then i would definately go there but then that is far off and chances of selection is rather dim. As of now whatever i have at hand is far more important and costly than anyother which is in the bush.”
Interviewer said,”ok i like your approach. So tell me what makes a manager successful?”
i said,”his grit, his foresight, his knowledge, his handling of fellow men”
Interviewer said,” why foresight?”
I said,” It is because without foresight he will not be able to predict the change in market . Everything that is working today may not be working tomorrow. If he wont know when to take the leap or enter and leave the market then it would be a disaster. Even in small projects the project manager should have an idea about the money invested behind that project and its future implications . If he doesnot extrapolate the consequences it could lead to bankruptcy”
Interviewer said,” Your hobbies?”
I said,” writing poems and shortstories. I have got international publication of a few”
Interviewer said,” then why dont u go try being a writer and not a mba grad?”
I said,:”sir quite frankly it is my part time work and i believe i can levearage on it later by being an mba too. To choose a career is like choosing one needle out of a haystack. It is decided such that there is always a fall back option and weighing of returns is important before taking a risk. Writing can happen with mba . But if i am just a writer and one of my book fails i will be in the streets begging for a living. As a mba grad it would also give me recongnition in the society and like chetan bhagat a formidable base to exploit or a mass who would be ready to buy my books rather than just begging people to buy one.Because everybody wants branded products no one wants to buy untested goods. A brand would give me a headstart.”
Interviewer said,”hmm. So you dont take risks? “
I said,” No risk no gain. BUt then to gain it has to be calculated risk. I prefer it over emotional jump type risks because it certainly jeopardises whatever conspicuous chances of gain may have preexisted.”
Interviewer said,” What is difference between Capital and money markets?”
I said, “ One is short time and the other is permanent”
Interviewer said,” Tell me what relationship exist between recession and gdp?”
I said,” both are interrelated. When gdp goes high ..prices grow high and once that happens to bring down the prices the central bank increases the rates of interest. Hence decreasing money in circulation and hence recession starts. IT is cyclic process”
Interviewer said,” ok thanks. Nice meeting you. There is one more task .U will have to write an essay . So please complete it before u leave.”
I said,”Thank you sir”
The interview ended there the escort person then took me to another room . An essay was to be written within 30 minutes. IT was on Indian Economy and threat of Recession. I wrote about GDP and its interdependence on Recession and the various development programs initiated to create demand by the government like SGRY, Mahatma Gandhi grameen swarojgar yojana ,Rajeev Gandhi Vidhyutikaran yojona and so on.
